The municipality of Envigado, also known as the stately city of Antioquia, has historically played an important role in the commercial, economic, and service development of Aburra Sur, Antioquia, and the country. This municipality has an important legacy of large, medium, and small businesses that continue to contribute to economic development. Thanks to the strength of its residents, merchants, and the mayor's office, they have managed to create important projects for the sector. Here's how Envigado's commercial transformation has unfolded.
In November 2022, the Mayor's Office of Envigado and the metropolitan area completed the work carried out on Buena Mesa Street with an investment of more than 3.9 billion pesos and 2,350 m² of public space. This transformation allowed for the pedestrianization of public space, the installation of cobblestones, open-air dining areas, meeting points, and parking areas. It is also an urban renewal project to promote integration between commercial uses and social activity in the sector.
On the other hand, it also aims to strengthen the municipality's productivity and economic recovery, benefiting all merchants who have had the opportunity to remain in rented premises in Envigado, as there is high demand from diners and tourists looking for open spaces to enjoy new experiences.
Another positive aspect of the project, recognized by merchants and residents alike, is that during the transformation process, commercial establishments did not have to close, allowing them to continue their work and maintain the sector's income and momentum. It is also important to mention that the trees in the area were preserved.
This commercial transformation of Envigado, which has also become a new gastronomic landmark, is located on Carrera 44 A, between Calle 30 Sur and Calle 30 A.
The Envigado Square Market was built in 1936 and is a place that has been recognized as a heritage site by its own inhabitants. After 87 years, it will be renovated by the Municipal Government.
This renovation will have a total investment of $17.024 billion pesos and will have a built area of 4,834 m² distributed over two levels and a semi-basement. It will have 77 commercial premises, an electrical substation, an elevator, and comfortable spaces for merchants and visitors. The entire construction will comply with safety, health, and accessibility regulations for people with disabilities.

This renovation is being carried out in response to requests from some of the merchants who rent premises in Envigado's market square, and also because, having been built almost a century ago, the building does not comply with health regulations or regulations for people with disabilities, the electrical wiring is obsolete, the floors are uneven, and the sewer and water systems have problems that need to be repaired and improved.
For this reason, all workers occupying leased properties in Envigado in the plaza had to relocate their businesses to other nearby areas. Some even chose to work from home while the construction work was completed. This situation worries them, as their commercial activities may be affected.
What guarantees does the Envigado City Council ofer to local merchants? In response to all the concerns that have arisen, the Envigado City Council has stated that no merchant will lose their stall and that their rent will not be increased due to the construction work, apart from the normal increase that must be implemented each year.
Undoubtedly, and despite the efforts that must be made by all parties involved, these works will provide the sector and merchants with better economic development, allowing them to meet the demands of visitors to the area.
Thanks to the various transformations being carried out in several sectors of the city to boost the commercial sector, entrepreneurs and merchants have the opportunity to offer visitors better places of interest.
