In Colombia, each celebration is carried out differently compared to other cultures, thanks to customs that have been passed down from generation to generation. These unique traditions make this season an international reference, as many foreigners visit our country during this time to enjoy the folklore and joy that characterize us.
From the very first days, family unity takes center stage, beginning with one of our most important dates: December 7th, when we celebrate the traditional Day of the Little Candles. On this day, every corner of the country lights up in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
There are places that are especially captivating on this date and have become national references, such as Villa de Leyva (Cundinamarca), Medellín (Antioquia), and Quimbaya (Quindío).
December 16th marks the beginning of the Novena of Aguinaldos. On this date, both children and adults sing Christmas carols with devotion, announcing the birth of Baby Jesus and creating anticipation for the most awaited event of the season.
Christmas Eve is one of the most cherished moments of the year, as it celebrates the birth of Baby Jesus and becomes a space for family reunions. As part of the tradition, everyone eagerly awaits the long-desired gift they wished for throughout the year.
December 31st is the celebration of New Year’s Eve and comes with a series of traditional rituals (agüeros) in which believers place their hopes for abundance, health, and prosperity. Among these customs are eating the 12 grapes at midnight, carrying cash and lentils in one’s pockets, and walking around the block with a suitcase in hopes of traveling more in the coming year.
Despite the fact that 2020 was such an unusual year, filled with many challenges for humanity, it is important to experience these moments in family unity. These spaces recharge us, make us stronger, and prepare us to face the new year ahead.
This season is a beautiful opportunity for reconciliation, to feel happiness in our hearts, to enjoy time with loved ones, and to be grateful for everything we have experienced.
From Alberto Álvarez Inmobiliaria, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2021! 🎄✨
